Head of Anatomical Pathology
 
The Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Manager plan, organize, and direct the overall operation of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Assist with budget preparation, monitoring of revenue, expenses, test volume, FTE utilization, report/result turnaround, as well as workflow, and customer/employee satisfaction; plan and manage technology innovations, new facility design and implementation, new business, laboratory expansion, focus on service, maintains compliance with State, Federal, CAP and other accreditation agencies' regulations, in adherence to departmental and company policies and procedures and promote the company's mission and values across the integrated laboratory network. Expected to participate in the Senior Leadership Team, coordinate AP Lab departments involved in initiatives, and help develop the strategic direction for the AP operations.
 
Key objectives:

Clinical oversight - Work across the geographical scope of the Laboratory, performing or supervising anatomical pathology services consistent with the pathologist’s scope of training and registration, and other diagnostic collection techniques, reporting cases, and conducting clinical meetings and case discussions.
Clinical Governance - Participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
Capacity building - Provide leadership to promote the interest and development of the unit through strategic planning, ensuring cohesion of the overall functions of the unit by working effectively with internal and external stakeholders while always maintaining positive interpersonal relationships.
Health and Safety and Infection Control - Ensure that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the local work health and safety requirements, but also to Australian standards.
 
Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Anatomic Laboratory Director, Laboratory Medical Director, Laboratory Leadership, and other AP Laboratory staff to suggest test methodologies and instrumentation appropriate for clinical use.
  • Participate in the hiring, training, and promotion of laboratory staff in conjunction with Laboratory Leadership.
  • Grow and develop staff to increase overall knowledge base.
  • Create a culture of operational and continuous quality improvement.
  • Manages conflict and identifies problems to arrive at constructive solutions while maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Involved with the selection, validation, and implementation of new test platforms.
  • Oversees the technical and operational aspects of the Laboratory.
  • Supports the development and delivery of laboratory service collaterals.
  • Communicates to Management updates of departmental action items on a regular basis.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, CAP, and other accreditation agencies' regulations.
  • Establishes and implements metrics, policies, objectives, and procedures for departments and reports on results and outcomes.
  • Ensures that CQI efforts in conjunction with the Quality Officer comply with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Coordinates, supports, and monitors laboratory departments with a major focus on improving the operations to run seamlessly to ensure quality patient care.
  • Assists in the development of budgets including recommendations for major equipment purchases.
  • Assists in the development of facility designs and remodels.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans in alignment with the company's values and mission.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Selection criteria:

Essential Skills, Experience and Knowledge Qualifications
  • Candidates must have qualifications suitable for registration as a medical practitioner (such as a medical degree from an Australian institution)
  • Eligible for Medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or equivalent
  • Post-graduate speciality qualifications in general pathology, including anatomical pathology and microbiology, recognised by the Royal College of Pathologists (Australasia)
  • Anatomical/surgical pathologist is most preferred, but the clinical/general pathologist is considered as well.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Histotechnology, Cytotechnology, other science-related field, or equivalent; Master's degree preferred
  • HT/HTL, PA, CT ASCP certification required or equivalent.
  • 5 years experience in the laboratory, a similar environment
  • Three (3) or more years of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Knowledge of Quality Improvement programs, processes, and tools
  • Ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels, particularly peers, team members, Pathologists, and other departments.
  • Knowledge of project planning, budgeting, human resources management, and report development
  • Prior experience validating and implementing new Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, interpersonal and public speaking Self-directed, open to new learning experiences and demonstrating teamwork.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple resources effectively to accomplish a task or accept an idea through leadership.
  • High level of competency with computers, the internet, and computer software such as MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
